Just 18 months after this small Naval Base Community water desalinization plant had to issue a Boil Water Notice due to a break in one of their infrastructure pipes, they are considering bottling the water to make up for possible lost Military Construction funding that may be diverted to build The Wall along the southern border between the United States and Mexico. When asked if the desalinization plant had enough capacity to provide enough water to the residents of Guantanamo Bay Naval Base while also supporting a bottling operation, a plant spokesperson said, "Well, we have had periods where our demand drops drastically on the base and during those times we could divert our excess capacity towards this new venture. We also know from speaking with representatives of the Naval Exchange(NEX) that one of their leading product categories is bottled water. We feel that it would be a win win situation."
A spokesperson for the NEX could not be reached for comment, but a customer willingly spoke with us. One said, "I could see GTMO water being sold to places like Flint, Michigan where they already boil their water. I just worry that if they sold it to the NEX here on base, the NEX may accidentally place it in the diet soft drink aisle. I would hope that the labeling is very clear to all of us."
